“Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”
— Nelson Mandela
As a business owner and a parent, life often feels like a juggling act. I’m sure many of you can relate.
Daily life is a cacophony of work, the kids’ activities and homework, ensuring Rosa has had plenty of exercise and fresh air and making sure I have found the time for my own wellbeing – eating properly, exercise and sufficient rest.
To make the day sound more like a symphony than a cacophony, I have learned that there is one key element. It’s a quality that I’m always looking to develop and sustain within myself, and that is resilience.
Resilience is not just about bouncing back from challenges; it’s about thriving in the face of adversity. As business owners, we are no strangers to setbacks. Whether it’s a financial downturn or a phase of challenging conveyancing processes, the business landscape is rife with obstacles. Similarly, parenthood brings its own set of trials – school and hobbies, and just the constant worry about the well-being of our children as they navigate their way to adulthood.
However, it’s our ability to adapt, persevere, and find solutions in the toughest of times that defines our resilience.
One of my favourite books on this topic that I’ve now read twice (and will continue to pick up occasionally) is GUTS: Greatness Under Tremendous Stress.
Written by a fantastic guy called Brian “Iron Ed” Hiner, the book describes strategies for achieving success whilst facing significant challenges and stress. The book is a great tool for developing resilience and maintaining focus and is fantastic for strengthening your mindset and mental capabilities.
If you’re a business owner, a parent, work in an environment that can be stressful, or are just looking to thrive in life, I highly recommend reading this book!
The book offers practical advice and tools for building resilience, managing stress effectively, and harnessing one’s inner strength to achieve goals and realise potential. Drawing from research in psychology, neuroscience, and personal development, “GUTS” provides insights and techniques for individuals seeking to excel in both their personal and professional lives, even amidst difficult circumstances.
My final comment on the topic of resilience is the importance of passing on what we have learned to the next generation.
From my own learnings, I have shared insights with my own teenage sons. I want them to have the tools to approach challenges with confidence, work to the best of their ability no matter the circumstances and thrive in all areas of life.
Have you read GUTS? Share with me if you have!
