Adoration For Old English Sheepdogs

Rosa walk

“Once you have a wonderful dog, a life without one, is a life diminished.”

Dean Koontz

We had a summer of love for Rosa this year. Perhaps that’s because she’s fully grown now and makes her presence known, or perhaps it’s just that we’ve moved and so she’s the new dog on the block? Whatever the reason, the levels of attention that she attracts whilst out and about has been non-stop over the summer.

Old English Sheepdogs (OES) are undeniably cute. They’re fuzzy, affectionate, funny, and following a big push by breed enthusiasts they’ve been catapulted from near extinction to enjoying a renewed popularity and demand as a family pet.

However, despite our love for Rosa, OESs are big dogs that require a big commitment.  There’s a lot to consider before making the choice to welcome an OES into your family. So, I thought I’d share some information on the breed.

High Exercise

They’re big and smart. Their exercise and stimulation needs are high. For us, Rosa is worth every second of that. We’re a pretty active family so really, it’s Rosa who gives us the perfect excuse to pull our wellies on and get out and about walking and running around with her. However, 2 hours of daily dog exercise is not for everyone so it’s a factor that should be at the top of the list when making a decision.

High Maintenance

OES’ coats are gorgeous but they also demand a lot of attention. If you want to keep their coats long, they’ll require daily grooming. The alternative is to keep it short but that also requires regular visits to the groomers, and further expense. One way or another, the gorgeous fuzzy coats of the OES require a lot of attention.

High Attention

OESs are super affectionate. With the right levels of physical exercise, mental stimulation and diet, they will love you like no other pet. And, that can also be something to consider. If you’re more of a cat person who’s happy with the occasional head boop then an OES might not be for you. An OES will bond with you and follow you wherever you go, and I mean everywhere!! If you have kids then you’ll remember that toddler phase where your little ones follow you to the bathroom, well that OESs, and they never grow out of it.

So, lots of consider. The video below gives an honest overview of life with an OES. And, I love this article in Country Living on what’s to love, (and what’s not) about this amazing dog breed.

We wouldn’t be without Rosa. She is truly the glue of our family, in every way.

I’d love to know if any of you share a passion for Old English Sheepdogs, or just if you share your life with some four-legged family members. Please get in touch.

All the best,
